Matthew Parker’s Decoder #2011-11

Did you see the man making all those flag signals at the end of the Jones & Parker Mystery in November 2011 issue of Clubhouse magazine? If you didn’t, here it is again:

The signals will help you solve this question: What does encouragement give someone?   __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __.

To solve the answer, you’ll have to flag down a great, classic code. Here it is!

How It Works:
This code is created using the semaphore flag system. Decoding it is as easy as matching the flag signals with the letters they stand for. Now you try it!

Coolness!
The semaphore flag system has been around for hundreds of years. It’s a way for people on land or boat to communicate with people far away from them—for instance, someone in a plane or helicopter. A version of it was used frequently in the U.S. Civil War to signal far away horsemen, but the bright flags became an easy target for the enemy!
