A good detective keeps her eyes and ears open.
Matthew and I both love going to the beach in the summer. Thankfully, our families took a vacation together. Jay and his family were there too, making the vacation even more exciting.
We were lying lazily on the beach while Camilla and Barrett swam in the ocean. Suddenly, I heard a commotion. Olivia was yelling at Jay about something, and Jay was shouting back at her.
“What’s going on?” Matthew asked.
“Jay stole my lunch,” Olivia said angrily.
“No, I didn’t,” Jay denied. “I was sitting by the water, watching the waves.”
“Start at the beginning,” I told Olivia.
“I had just bought a hot dog,” Olivia said. “I left it on my towel while I used the restroom. When I came back, my food was gone and I saw Jay licking ketchup off his lips.”
“Yeah, I had just gotten lunch too,” Jay explained. “That’s what you do at lunchtime.”
“Suuure,” Olivia said. She obviously didn’t believe him.
As they continued their shouting match, Matthew and I examined Olivia’s towel. We found breadcrumbs nearby, along with two small W’s in the sand.
“Hold it,” I said. “I know who the culprit is.”
