Over 390,000 children are in foster care in the United States.
Some boys and girls in foster care are victims of abuse and are there for their own safety. Others have been abandoned. Still others have parents who just cannot care for them. Whatever the reason, it’s a frightening journey that no child should have to make alone . . .
Living a nightmare.
Michael wakes up to flashing lights and loud voices outside his window. He covers his head with a tattered blanket and tries to block out the noise. He’s afraid and wonders . . . “What will happen to me?”
Strangers are scary, too.
Michael isn’t sure what’s more frightening, the yelling and screaming . . . or the strangers who’ve come into his home with flashing lights and handcuffs. He wonders if he is in trouble.
Where am I going?
The adults said it’s time to go. Michael doesn’t know where. Where will I sleep? Will I be safe? Who’s going to take care of me? It’s terrifying to leave the only home Michael’s ever known even though they said it was for his own good.
All alone.
Micheal had never felt so alone. All he had was a trash bag with a few of his things. He missed the couple of toys he used to hold when he got frightened. Maybe no one wanted him. Did anyone care?
A special bundle.
The adults took him to a nice lady’s house. She gave him something that she said he could keep forever! It was a suitcase to put his things in. She said he could take it with him wherever he went. And the best part was that it had some gifts—a teddy bear and a Bible! She said they belonged to him, and no one could take them away!
I matter.
God connected Michael with a loving, faith-filled family. They taught him about God and told him how special he was. He didn’t have to worry about where he would sleep or if he would be safe. Most of all, he knew that someone cared and that he mattered. Michael didn’t have to feel alone anymore.
