Worship Styles: The Traditionalist

Traditionalists love God through tradition and long-established patterns of worship. They can worship through consistent habits and rituals.

What is the Traditionalist?

Traditionalists love God through tradition and long-established patterns of worship. They thrive on routine and ritual. They love using words and talking through concepts and will likely take notes during sermons. Psalm 119 — all 176 verses of it! — celebrates this brand of spirituality from beginning to end: “How blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord. How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, who seek Him with all their heart” (Psalm 119:1-2).

Activities You May Enjoy

  • Choose a regular night of the week to read and meditate on a Psalm.
  • Use a set liturgy, like the Book of Common Prayer or another prayer book, in your devotionals.
  • Develop and memorize a prayer that you can repeat at a meal or another consistent time.
  • Develop a reading plan for your Bible reading.
  • Memorize Bible passages to recite daily.

Grow Your Faith

Although it is helpful to discover the easiest way for you to connect with God, this knowledge shouldn’t stop you from growing your faith in other ways. As a Traditionalist, your strength is connecting with God through tradition and routine, but that may lead to weakness in other worship styles. For example, as someone who likes tradition, you may not be inclined to speak up for change where change needs to happen. But speaking up for change is an important aspect of Christian living, so that would be an excellent area to challenge yourself in.

Here are some other ideas for how to expand your faith and grow in other worship styles:

  • Naturalists love God through His creation. Try taking a walk through nature and appreciating God’s creation.
  • Sensates connect with God through their senses. Worship through creativity and attend an art gallery.
  • Activists worship God by standing up for what is right. Give it a try by volunteering at a food pantry or homeless shelter.
