Faith Conversation: Motivated by Love

For many, fear, desire and ambition are more familiar motives than love. But God's love changes us. This devotion offers you and your spouse questions to start a conversation about motivation and love.

As a couple, discuss 1 Corinthians 13. Read the chapter together or individually, then focus your conversation on the passage below, discussing the questions that follow.

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have rel=”noopener noreferrer” not love, I am nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:1-2).

  • Who or what do you love most?
  • How does this show in your daily life?
  • How can we strengthen our love for God? For one another?

Jesus loved us so much that He endured the Cross so we could know His love. For most of us, fear, desire and ambition are more familiar motives than love. But God’s love changes us. It allows us to replace our natural, self-centered motives with a selfless love for others. That means we can forgive when we want to seek revenge or reach out to a spouse who has acted in an unloving way. Because of Christ’s example, we can initiate love — especially in our marriages — even when we don’t feel like it. God’s love motivates us to serve Him instead of ourselves.
